Even if we do have excellent airconditioning at Inhispania, the afternoon heat in Madrid can be overpowering in Summer, but NOT when you know the perfect places to relax and embrace the sunshine. Here are my 3 favourite tanning spots to hit after my Spanish lessons (Intensive 20, 10am-1pm Mon-Fri), depending on my mood:
El Parque de Buen Retiro
Retiro (Calle de Alfonso XII) is the obvious choice of park as it is the most famous: located on the east edge of the the centre near the Puerta de Alcalá not too far from Inhispania’s Banco de España location. These former royal gardens, with their sculptures, monuments, galleries and fountains make the whole tanning experience rather decadent. My favourite thing to do here is take in the sun while lazing in a rowboat on the lake for a mere 4,65€ between a few friends for 45 minutes.
Templo de Debod
The Templo de Debod (Paseo Pintor Rosales) is a 2200 year old Egyptian temple that was donated to Spain in 1968 by Egypt as a thank you for helping to save their temple of Abu Simbel. It is located in the Parque del Oeste, in between Plaza de España and Ventura Rodriguez metro stations and provides a dramatic and alternative backdrop to your relaxation. The grassy verges are a hotspot for children playing and students reading, studying and drinking sangria so the atmosphere is very friendly and relaxed.
Piscina Municipal El Lago
The piscina de verano at the Casa de Campo lago (Paseo Puerta del Angel 7, metro Lago) is a seasonal treat to relieve Madrileños and tourists alike from the heat. This complex is on the edge of the biggest of Madrid’s park and as a result it feels like a distant haven from the bustling centre of town, yet you are only 2 metro stops from Plaza de España. For 4,45€ you are entitled to stay for 2 hours but noone ever checks your ticket so it is well worth the money for the chance to cool off until 8pm in the outdoor pools. Also worth noting that it is super gay friendly.
