If you are looking for something alternative, modern and slightly edgy… the Matadero contemporary art centre is where you want to go. You can find this interesting building and all it’s cultural wonders in the district of Legazpi, one of the southern barrios of Madrid.
The centre dedicates its installations to temporary exhibitions, to design and to dramatic arts. Matadero currently offers three spaces where you can have a drink, eat something and relax: Café Teatro, La Cantina and La Terraza Matadero.
During the daytime, you can enjoy the Cineteca, the reading room or exhibitions such as “Yesterday is Today”, (a major collection of popular literature from the 19th and 20th centurias created by collector and bibliophile Fernando Eguidazu). Alternatively there are special projects such as the video game launcher (lanzadera de videojuegos)! Estación Futuro is a space devoted to the gaming experience and to researching the playing process as a creative critical activity. Its aim is to put together a working mode for reflection upon games as a cultural process where different ideas and activities are developed.
I however can most recommend the night time concerts. Check the website to see the line up because during the summer, the terraza-bar on the Plaza Matadero houses some activity or artistic, musical installation as well as the season’s leading activities, such as Fringe13. It´s fun, it’s free to enter and there’s cheap Mahou – winning.
Ps. The strange name is because it used to be an abattoir…but don’t let that put you off, you’d never know now!
