Toledo

Each week, we, the good folk of Inhispania, kindly organise a range of optional extra curricular activities for you, the students, to enjoy. These range from the more simple “Tapas en El Tigre” or a football match against the teachers to excursions to local places of interest such as Toledo.

So here is a little background information to excite you ...

Famed as the city of 3 cultures, Toledo’s rich cultural and architectural heritage owes itself to early religious tolerance which allowed the coexistence of Christians, Jews and Muslims. Today, the religious monuments you can see include the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca, the Mosque of Cristo de la Luz and the church of San Sebastian.

This World Heritage City has grown in importance since Roman times and has an extensive history – from 10th century religious battles and insurrections, a stint as the capital of the Spanish Empire, to the storming of the Alcazar fortress by Republicans in 1936 during the civil war.

The famous artist El Greco made Toledo his home and the city still owns some of his masterpieces – you can visit his home which is now el Museo Casa de El Greco in la Plaza de Consistorio.

As it is located 70km south of Madrid, on our trip we go by train: it takes just half an hour and costs under 20€.

So, if you’re interested in seeing this famous and historical city then don’t forget to check our activities notice board regularly to see if we are going, get all the useful information and sign up your name!
