San Fermín, Pamplona

The bull running in Pamplona, also known as San Fermines, is one of the most famous of Spain’s extreme carnivals and celebrations and is held in honour of Saint Fermin, the region’s patron.
The event is opened annually 12:00pm 6 July by the traditional “chupinazo” firework and is closed at midnight July 14th by the customary rendition of Pobre de Mí.
However, the most exciting part of the carnival is the daily encierro. At 8am this happens: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTHHgxFOD_g

Pamplona is pretty easy to reach from Madrid; you can easily catch an ALSA coach from Avenida de America. This journey will take about 5 hours though… but it’s worth it for a once in a lifetime weekend away. Plus, it will provide an exciting story to chat about in class!
Ernest Hemingway was fascinated by the encierro tradition and wrote about them in his novels The Sun Also Rises and Death in the Afternoon which brought the festival to the attention of the English speaking world.
Obviously it is very dangerous to run with bulls and therefore this carnival is not to be taken lightly.
Nearer to Inhispania however, you can watch bullfights at the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas http://www.las-ventas.com/ in Madrid.
