Going upmarket

The San Antón Market is a gem I only discovered recently. Tucked away in Chueca, one of the trendiest parts of town, this market slash food court offers everything you could possibly ask for. From sushi to traditional Greek cuisine, luxury frozen goods to to seafood fresh from the water, a healthy fruit and veg stand to some of the best homemade cakes I have seen in Madrid- it’s hard to find a gap in the market (if you’ll pardon the pun).

Admittedly we’re not talking budget food, but for a Christmas treat to yourself, or even if you’re looking for presents to take home, I would definitely recommend a visit. To be honest, you could even walk in without a penny in your pocket and simply admire the vast array of food stands, swish surroundings and pretty Christmas lights as an “I have no intention of buying anything, by the way” visitor.

For those of you really wishing to splash out, there’s also a restaurant on the top floor, which offers a luxury dining experience for a price that is easily justifiable. If you opt for “menú del día” you’ll pay €12,50 for a starter, main, dessert, and also a drink and some bread to accompany your meal- you can’t argue with that.

Chueca is also just a really nice area to wander around, especially at this time of year when querky little gift shops are extra appealing. So when you’ve had enough of gazing at food, give your grumbling tummy a break and take a wander. The perfect afternoon activity I’d say!
